Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery to improve the nose’s shape and size. Cosmetic rhinoplasty enhances the look of the face, whereas functional rhinoplasty improves nasal function. Rhinoplasty reshapes a nose that looks upturned, bulbous, droopy, or hooked. Also, you can eliminate dips or bumps, fix wide nostrils, and make a nose smaller or bigger based on your facial balance.
The rhinoplasty recovery time varies on the procedure, your body’s unique healing process, and the aftercare tips you follow. Typically, it takes up to one year. However, most patients are completely healed within four to six months.
The recovery after rhinoplasty depends on the complexity of the procedure. It’s performed under general anesthesia and takes just 2 hours. You can return home on the same day and rest for one or two weeks after the surgery. You will have splints and bandages taped to your cheek and forehead.
In the first week, you can experience soreness and pain. The nose and surrounding area will be swollen. Keep your head elevated to reduce the swelling and discomfort.
Avoid heavy physical activities and rest for the initial few days.
The splint and bandages will be removed during the second week’s follow-up visit. Still, you can experience bruising and swelling. Getting back to work depends on how you feel about your appearance. It’s ideal to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous physical activities.
Your swelling and bruising will subside after the first two weeks, and the discomfort caused by the surgery will decrease after a month. You will be able to see the results within these days. While swelling and bruising still exist, they remain unnoticeable. Your doctor will advise you to return to daily activities but avoid strenuous activities.
After 2 to 3 months, your face will look and feel good with improved nose shape, size, and contour. The nose tip is susceptible to swelling and retains subtle signs for up to one year.
For a few rhinoplasty patients, the swelling at the tip of the nose takes almost one year to subside. Once the swelling subsides, you will see the final results.
Non-surgical rhinoplasty requires little or no recovery time. However, surgical rhinoplasty recovery depends on the complexity of the procedure. More invasive procedures, like wide nose or crooked rhinoplasty, will have a longer recovery period.
If you have a medical condition, it will slow down the healing process. Younger patients recover faster than people with bad health and lifestyle issues. Moreover, regular use of alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco slows down the recovery process.
Follow the postoperative instructions on what to do and what not to do. Failure to follow these aftercare instructions will affect recovery time and compromise the results of cosmetic surgery.
