Intimate fillers are injections of hyaluronic acid gel, most often into the labia majora (the outer labia), to restore volume that has reduced over time. It is a non-surgical treatment that usually takes less than an hour, with little downtime.
Changes in this area with age, weight loss or after childbirth are a normal part of life, and treatment is never necessary. At Stanford Clinics in Bahrain, every treatment starts with a private consultation where we listen to your concerns, examine you and explain honestly what fillers can and cannot do.
What are intimate fillers?
Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the body that attracts and holds water. Fillers made from it are widely used in the face and, more recently, in the intimate area. Treatment is mainly used to:
- Restore volume to the labia majora: where they have become thinner, flatter or looser with age, weight loss or hormonal change.
- Improve symmetry: where one side has noticeably less volume than the other.
- Soften the appearance of the mons pubis: in selected cases, where volume has reduced.
In some cases, small amounts of hyaluronic acid are also used around the vaginal entrance for dryness or discomfort, but evidence for this use is limited and it is only considered after careful assessment.
How intimate fillers work
The filler is placed under the skin with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula. The gel adds volume straight away and holds moisture in the tissue. Over time, the body gradually breaks the filler down naturally, which is why results are temporary.
Fillers do not tighten the vagina, and they are not a treatment for incontinence or for sexual function. If those are your concerns, we will discuss other assessments and options with you.
Who may be suitable
Intimate fillers may suit you if you:
- Have noticed loss of volume or looser skin of the outer labia with age, weight loss or after childbirth.
- Are bothered by asymmetry in volume between the two sides.
- Prefer a non-surgical option with a temporary result.
- Are in good general health, with no active infection in the area.
- Have realistic expectations and understand that results vary and are not permanent.
What happens during your appointment
A typical appointment takes around 45 to 60 minutes:
- Consultation: your doctor reviews your medical history, medications and goals, examines the area and agrees a plan with you, including the amount of filler, before you give consent.
- Preparation: the area is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied. Many fillers also contain a local anaesthetic.
- Injection: the filler is injected in small amounts and gently shaped. This usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
- After treatment: the area is checked and cleaned, and you receive written aftercare advice. You can go home the same day.
- Review: a follow-up visit around two to four weeks later lets us check the result once swelling has settled.
Aftercare
Simple aftercare helps the filler settle and reduces the risk of infection:
- Avoid sexual intercourse for at least 3 to 7 days, or as your doctor advises.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, cycling and horse riding for about a week.
- Avoid baths, swimming, saunas and steam rooms for 48 hours.
- Wear loose, comfortable underwear and clothing for a few days.
- Do not massage the area unless your doctor asks you to.
- Contact us urgently if you notice increasing pain, skin colour changes, blistering or signs of infection.
Recovery and results
Some swelling, tenderness and bruising are normal for a few days, and most women return to everyday activities the next day. The result is visible straight away and settles over about two weeks as swelling goes down.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary. Results in this area often last around 12 months, and sometimes longer, but this varies between individuals and depends on the product and amount used. Top-up treatments can be considered if you wish to maintain the result.
Why some women choose intimate fillers
When planned and injected by a trained doctor, intimate fillers offer:
- A non-surgical treatment with little downtime.
- Results that are visible straight away.
- Gradual, adjustable volume that can be built up in small steps.
- A temporary effect, so you stay in control of future treatments.
- Filler that can be dissolved if needed.
Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if there is a complication or you are unhappy with the result. Your doctor will explain this option during your consultation.
Side effects, risks and cost
Common, short-lived effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness at the injection sites. Less common risks include:
- Small lumps or uneven areas, which may need massage, further treatment or dissolving.
- Asymmetry.
- Infection.
- Delayed inflammatory reactions or nodules, sometimes weeks or months later.
- Allergic reaction to the filler or the anaesthetic.
- Rarely, filler entering or pressing on a blood vessel, which can damage the skin and tissue and needs urgent treatment.
Who should not have intimate fillers
Fillers are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you have an active infection or cold sores in the area (including genital herpes flare-ups), a bleeding disorder, an active autoimmune condition, a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, or a history of severe allergic reactions. Please tell your doctor about any blood-thinning medicines and previous fillers in the area.
Intimate filler cost in Bahrain
The cost depends on the area treated and the amount of filler needed, so we confirm a price after your consultation rather than quoting a fixed figure. Your doctor will explain the plan and the cost before any treatment begins.
Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt?
Numbing cream is applied first and most fillers contain a local anaesthetic, so most women describe mild discomfort or pressure.
How long do intimate fillers last?
Often around 12 months, although this varies from person to person.
Do fillers tighten the vagina?
No. Intimate fillers are mainly used to restore volume to the outer labia. They are not a treatment for vaginal laxity, incontinence or sexual function.
When can I have intercourse again?
Usually after 3 to 7 days, once tenderness has settled, or as your doctor advises.
Can the filler be removed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed.
Is it the same as fat transfer?
No. Fat transfer is a surgical procedure using your own fat. Fillers are non-surgical and temporary. Your doctor can explain the differences at consultation.
