Cosmetic and functional gynecology covers a group of procedures that address changes to the vulva and vagina — most often after childbirth, with age, or following hormonal change. At Stanford Medical Center in Bahrain, these are assessed and performed by a licensed consultant gynecologist in a private, unhurried consultation. Not every concern needs a procedure, and we will tell you when it doesn’t.
Why women ask about these procedures
The reasons are usually practical rather than cosmetic. The concerns we hear most often are:
- Changes after childbirth — tissue laxity, altered sensation, or discomfort that has not resolved on its own
- Physical discomfort — irritation, chafing, or pain during exercise, cycling, or with certain clothing
- Stress urinary incontinence — leaking with coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise
- Vaginal dryness and atrophy — commonly related to menopause or hormonal change, and often treatable without surgery
- Asymmetry or size of the labia — where it causes genuine physical discomfort
Many of these have non-surgical answers. Pelvic floor physiotherapy, topical treatment, or hormonal management resolve a significant proportion of cases, and a good consultation should raise those options before any procedure is discussed.

Privacy
Consultations take place in a private clinical room. Your records are confidential. You may bring a companion if you wish, and a female chaperone is available on request. Nothing is photographed, shared or published without your specific written consent, and consent to treatment is entirely separate from consent to any use of images.
What a consultation involves
An initial appointment takes 30 to 45 minutes. Your consultant will take a full medical, obstetric and gynecological history, discuss what is troubling you and why, and carry out an examination only with your consent. You will be told which options are appropriate, which are not, and what happens if you choose to do nothing.
You will not be asked to make a decision at that appointment. Suitability is a clinical judgment made in person — it cannot be determined online, over the phone, or from photographs.
Risks and honest expectations
These are medical procedures and they carry risk. Surgical procedures such as labiaplasty carry risks including bleeding, infection, wound separation, scarring, asymmetry, changes in sensation, and the possibility of revision surgery. Non-surgical laser treatments carry risks including temporary discomfort, swelling, irritation and, uncommonly, burns or scarring.
Results vary from person to person. Some conditions respond well; others improve only partially. Some are better treated by other means entirely. Any clinician who promises you a specific outcome before examining you is not giving you reliable advice.
These procedures are not suitable during pregnancy, and are generally deferred until at least six months after childbirth or until breastfeeding has finished.

Is cosmetic gynecology performed by a female doctor at your clinic?
Yes. Cosmetic and functional gynecology at Stanford Medical Center is led by a licensed female consultant gynecologist. If having a female clinician matters to you, it will be arranged, and a female chaperone is available for any examination.
How long does recovery take after labiaplasty?
Most patients take three to five days away from work. Swelling and tenderness typically settle over two to three weeks. Exercise, swimming and intercourse are usually resumed at four to six weeks, confirmed at your follow-up. Full tissue settling can take several months.
Can laser treatment help with urinary leaking?
It may help with mild stress urinary incontinence in some patients, but it is not a treatment for all incontinence, and pelvic floor physiotherapy is often the appropriate first step. Your consultant will assess which type of incontinence you have before recommending anything.
Is treatment painful?
Surgical procedures are performed under local or general anaesthesia, so the procedure itself is not painful. Discomfort during recovery is normal and is managed with prescribed pain relief. Non-surgical laser treatments are generally well tolerated with topical anaesthetic.
